Garden To Do's - late March-April
For the Lawn
~ Rake up debris such sticks, leaves, dead grass, etc.
~ Apply lime (do a quick pH test to be sure)
~ Apply grass seed to fill any bare areas before the weeds do & water lightly and frequently to ensure good germination
~ Apply slow release organic fertilizer such as Organica Step 1 (or Kelp Booster for newly seeded lawns)
For the garden
~ cut back grasses, perennials, rose bushes (not climbers), butterfly bushes, caryopteris.
~ prune broken branches in trees & shrubs so they will heal properly
~ transplant overgrown trees, shrubs and later flowering perennials while they are still dormant.
~ weed & rake gardens before perennials start emerging & apply corn gluten or our new biodegradable weed fabric to help prevent weeds
~ inspect gardens, shrubs & trees for pest damage, ask our experts for the most current solutions
~ add compost now to flower & vegetable garden to improve soil structure and increase living matter
~ direct seed cold season crops such as lettuce & spinach into the garden, many other seeds can be started inside now to get a jump start.
~ divide grasses, and many summer and fall blooming perennials if needed.
