Cultural Information

Dionaea muscipula- Venus Fly Trap

Native to North Carolina this bulbar plant thrives in temperate climates. Planting mix should contain 3 parts peat to1 part sphagnum moss then add 1 part perlite. Fertilize bi-monthly during growing season with ¼ teaspoon of Schultz 33-11-11 per gallon of water. Water well with rain or pure water (not tap).

Sarracenia- North American Pitcher Plant

This temperate zoned, rhizome plant grows in North America from North Florida to Canada. Plant in peat moss or sphagnum and water with rain or pure water. Fertilize sparingly with ½ teaspoon Schultz 33-11-11 per gallon of water. Likes full sun and its roots submerged in water.

Nepenthes- Tropical Pitcher plant

A tropical,vining plant native from Northern Australia to Southern Japan. Plant in peat or sphagnum moss with orchid bark or sponge rock. Does not require as much water as other Carnivorous Plants but must never dry out. Likes 60-70% shade similar to Orchid culture. Fertilize sparingly with water soluble, orchid fertilizer. Makes a good orchid companion plant except requires more water. Protect from cold weather and never let get colder than 50 F.

Pinguicula- Butterwort

Most common in the Northern Hemisphere but distributed worldwide. Plant in peat or sphagnum moss and keep well watered with rain or pure water. Fertilize sparingly with diluted amount of water-soluble orchid fertilizer (1/2 tsp. per gallon). Likes full sun to partial shade.

Drosera-Sundew

Distributed throughout the world. Pot in peat and or sphagnum moss. Keep well watered with pure water and fertilize sparingly with water-soluble fertilizer (1/2 tsp. per gallon). Will grow in partial shade to full sun.

A special treat for Venus Fly Traps and Pitcher Plants- Purchase live cricket from pet store, freeze overnight and serve! Small cricket for Venus Fly Trap medium to large cricket for Pitcher Plant.
