Kennedy's believes that any homeowner can keep a beautiful lawn, even those of you not born with a green thumb! Correct advice and information is the key to your success. If you're willing to put in at least minimal effort, the staff at Kennedy's can help you to create and maintain a healthy green lawn. Some garden centers and discount stores "sell" consumers on a lawn "program". Kennedy’s does not believe in a set program. Every lawn and every homeowner is different. You may not want or need certain chemicals in the "program". Ask an expert what you need. Kennedy’s is committed to promoting organic fertilizers for your lawn whenever possible. Our staff never recommends a chemical if it's unnecessary. Kennedy's gardening information is not the only thing that's free. When you buy your lawn fertilizer from Kennedy's, you can borrow a spreader for a day at no charge. Lawn Fertilizers MNLA Fertilizers are the primary lawn fertilizers we carry at Kennedy’s. MNLA stands for the Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association. MNLA is a local non-profit organization that promotes professionalism in the nursery, garden center, and landscape industry. The MNLA only produces fertilizers for Massachusetts lawns and gardens. Kennedy’s has carried MNLA products for years and years and we believe it is the best fertilizer available. Kennedy’s also carries completely organic fertilizers. Both Cock-a-Doodle Doo and Bay State Fertilizer are recycled products. Pure Barnyard, a New England Company, produces Cock-a-Doodle Doo from chicken manure and Bay State Fertilizer is made in Massachusetts from our own brew of sewage waste. Fertilizers for Early Spring: MNLA Fertilizer w/ crabgrass control - Gives your lawn a good boost of fertilizer and keeps crab grass seeds from germinating in your lawn. The crabgrass pre-emergent is most effective in late March/early April when the yellow forsythia shrubs are in bloom in your neighborhood. OR MNLA Turf-O-Ganic - Kennedy's considers this the best all-round fertilizer. If you don’t want or need to control crabgrass or you missed the time, try this fertilizer. It's 75% Organic. OR MNLA Pro-Turf-O-Ganic - Similar to Turf-O-Ganic, but more economical. It's 60% Organic. OR Pure Barnyard’s Cock-a-doodle Doo - Chicken manure recycled into a safe, non-burning fertilizer. 100% organic fertilizer. OR Bay State Fertilizer - Recycled from Massachusetts sewage sludge. Slow acting, long lasting, and non-burning. 60% organic. Fertilizers for Late Spring: MNLA Fertilizer w/ Broadleaf Weed Killer – Feeds and greens the lawn and kills broadleaf weeds such as dandelions at the same time. The weed killer is effective if: 1. You have broadleaf weeds and they are active (it will not work before the weeds come up); 2. It is applied when the lawn is wet, such as early AM (morning dew) so the powder sticks to the weeds; 3. It doesn’t rain within a day or two after application. OR All the other straight Fertilizers listed above. Summer Same as above if the lawn is being watered regularly and is actively growing. Early Fall Any of the above listed straight lawn fertilizers. Late Fall MNLA Spring/Fall Fertilizer – An excellent late fall lawn fertilizer to get your lawn ready for winter and early spring. OR Bay State Fertilizer – see above OR Pure Barnyard’s Cock-a-doodle Doo – see above Controlling Grubs in the Lawn: Grass Seed Kennedy’s sells MNLA professional grass seed blends. The Massachusetts Nursery and Landscape Association selects the finest grass seed available. Each blend is special to Massachusetts and proven to grow in our climate. MNLA Pro-Turf is a professional blue grass mix if you're looking for a dark green, healthy looking lawn. Pro-Turf is top of the line grass seed. Kennedy’s recommends Pro-Turf seed for high visual lawns in sunny areas. MNLA Pro-Turf Shady is the best seed available if you're trying to grow grass in a shady area. MNLA Mass Turf is recommend by Kennedy’s as an all-purpose grass seed. It is a blend of all types of seed to meet all types of Massachusetts conditions. Mass Turf can be used in sun or shade. MNLA Savannah Turf is the toughest grass seed mix available. This blend of tall fescue seed may not be quite as pretty as Pro-Turf, but it is proven to withstand drought and grub damage better than any other type of seed. MNLA Quick Turf is the best seed to use if you need grass to come up in a hurry. Sod – If you're looking for instant results, sod is the way to go. Strips of sod are 6’ long and 18" wide or 9 square feet. When estimating larger areas, we suggest figuring 10% extra square feet to make up for "cuts" around the edges. Kennedy’s brings in fresh bluegrass sod for many weekends in the spring and fall. We recommend calling for current prices and availability. You should also tell us the number of pieces you need so that we can order it or call you when it comes in fresh. |
