Shade Trees Flowering Trees Shade Tolerant

Trees for Shady Locations

Most plants require some amount of sunlight.  All trees frefer prefer more than a half day of direct sunlight.  However, there are several types of trees that natively grow at the edge of the woods as an understory tree.  They typically have more tolerance for a lack of sunlight.  This list is intended to be used as a guide to choosing trees that receive less than a full day of sun.

Birch (Betula) – Birches are valued for their showy bark which does not diminish in the shade.  Birches will lean and stretch for sunlight, the deeper the shade.

Dogwood (Cornus) – All the dogwood Genus are tolerant to some amount of shade.  Many varieties are tolerant to even deep shade.  Traditionally they do not flower as profusely and some are subject to disease in the deep shade.  Half a day of sun and half a day shade is preferred for best performance.

Fringe Tree (Chionanthus) – Tolerant to half of day of shade.

Magnolia – Magnolias grow best in full sun, but often can be found doing well in shadier locations.  In shade the plants with bloom more sparse and the plant may lean towards the sun a little.  Some people actually prefer this natural appearance.

Sourwood (Oxydendrum) – Best flowers and fall color in sun, but still very attractive in only half day of sun.

Paperbark Maple (Acer griseum) – tolerant to half day of shade.

Redbuds – (Cercis) – similar to above grow at the edge of the woods.  They are tolerant to half a day of shade.  In deep shade they will not perform as well and may have a misshapen or natural appearance.  A half a day of sun and half day of shade is best.

Serviceberry/Shadblow (Amelanchier) – This Massachusetts native is tolerant to a half day of shade.  Does better with morning sun and afternoon shade.

Silverbell (Halesia) – Because of their disease resistance, this plant can tolerate some shade.  Like most flowering plants it performs best in full sun.

Snowbell (Styrax) – Tolerates light shade, up to a half a day of shade.  Some sun is required for best shape and flowering.

Stewartia – Stewartia tree are an underused in the landscape.  They perform well in half a day of sun and half a day of shade.
