Fertilizing
Kennedy’s recommends using granular fertilizer for shrubs, trees, and
perennials. Granular fertilizer can be sprinkled on top of the ground around
your plants. If you want to hide the granules, you can "scratch it in"
with a rake or cover it with mulch. Rain water will wash the fertilizer into the soil gradually to the
root area. Kennedy’s recommends the following granular fertilizers:
MNLA Plant-O-Ganic 8-8-8- a terrific all-purpose fertilizer for trees, shrubs, and
groundcovers. MNLA produces this exclusive plant food for Massachusetts gardens
and it includes many important minor trace elements.
Espoma Holly Tone – Perfect for acid loving plants such as Dogwoods,
Hollies, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Andromedas, Mt. Laurel, Boxwood and all other
evergreens.
MNLA Country Gardner 5-10-5 – Is a dependable, economical
fertilizer for flower and perennial gardens.
Espoma Plant Tone - A higher end
all-purpose fertilizer. A blend of all kinds of organic and chemical
fertilizers. This can be used on all outdoor plants.
Espoma Garden Tone – Blended with vegetables and flowers in mind. A good
fertilizer for plants that prefer neutral soil.
MNLA Superphosphate 0-20-0 -
Kennedy’s recommends superphosphate for new plants or established plants that
are not flowering well. Phosphorous promotes rooting and flowering and can be
applied any time during the growing season.
Spikes
If you need to feed trees or evergreens in the lawn, Kennedy’s recommends
fertilizer spikes to get below the roots of the lawn.
Liquid Fertilizers Fertilizers intended to be mixed
and applied with water are excellent for getting food to your plant's roots in a
hurry. Liquid Fertilizer gives your plant a quick boost. However, it
is not very long-lasting and needs to be re-applied to most plants on a regular
basis. If you want more control over your plant's "diet" use
liquid fertilizer instead of granules. Recommended liquid fertilizers:
Schultz All-purpose Plant Food - Great all-purpose liquid
fertilizer for just about any plant.
Schultz Blossom Booster - The high middle number represents extra
phosphorous. Phosphous promotes rapid and recurring blooms. This is
a great fertilizer fro annuals or plants that you want to encourage more
blossoms.
Coast of Maine Kelp Meal - A great source of organic fertilizer.
This product contains nutrient not found in chemical fertilizers. This is
a great fertilizer that can be used on all plants, especially ones lacking
certain nutrients chemical fertilizers cannot provide.
Neptune's Harvest Fish Emulsion - Similar to the above with a different
formula.
